The Long Walk Fact Sheet From LionsGate Publicity website

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

  • Raymond Garraty, #47 (Cooper Hoffman): Underneath Ray's easygoing manner is a passionate natural leader who's deeply empathetic. His closeness to his mother makes participation in The Long Walk a tough choice. Ray and Peter emerge as natural allies and, over time, develop a true friendship.
  • Peter McVries, #23 (David Jonsson): Exuding confidence, gregarious Peter McVries is an aspirational figure. With a deep well of empathy and grit, he's the spiritual core of the group, even as he grapples with the ghosts of his past that brought him to this moment. The brotherly bond he forms with Ray is a catalyst that challenges Ray's value system as the gruesomeness of the walk intensifies around them.
  • Stebbins, #38 (Garrett Wareing): Called a "fitness nut" and "Superman" before the walk begins, blond-haired, jelly sandwich-eating Stebbins seems like the one to beat to his fellow walkers. He's strong and tall with a tough exterior and also claims he hasn't been sick in over 10 years. Full of facts and statistics, Stebbins seems to be the poster child for The Long Walk.
  • Arthur Baker, #6 (Tut Nyuot): Having grown up dirt-poor, Arthur is more than ready to undergo the punishing demands of The Long Walk for a lifetime of riches and the fulfillment of his wish: to travel to the moon in a space rocket. Arthur's drive to win is grounded by his gentle manner and religious conviction.
  • Gary Barkovitch, #5 (Charlie Plummer): The self-appointed agitator of the group, Gary Barkovitch has a strategy to mercilessly taunt his co-competitors, while using his own camera to capture The Long Walk experience from the inside. But cracks start to appear in Barkovitch's aggressive front after he's targeted with his contempt and ridicule.
  • Hank Olson, #46 (Ben Wang): Street-smart, superstitious, and always ready to share an unsolicited and unfiltered opinion, Hank bonds with Ray, Peter, and Arthur to form a group they call "The Four Musketeers." He has a deep knowledge of The Long Walk's history and winning strategies, but will it be enough to sustain him when his body begins to fail?
  • Curly, #7 (Roman Griffin Davis): Curly is the pack's youngest member. He lied about his age to make it to The Long Walk and is plagued by leg pain in the opening stretch. Ray forms a bond with Curly as he struggles to keep up with the older, more worldly walkers.
  • Richard Harkness, #49 (Jordan Gonzalez): Eager, bookish Harkness is an aspiring journalist who carries a notepad around with him during the walk to chronicle the journey for posterity. But Ray and Peter remind Harkness that to do that he'll have to survive every last mile and - in the end - stand alone.
  • Collie Parker, #48 (Joshua Odjick): Parker, an Indigenous participant in the walk, exudes a tough exterior with those around him but deep down he's homesick and scared. As the miles pass and the tensions grow, he develops an increasingly antagonistic relationship with Gary Barkovitch.
  • Mr. William Garraty (Josh Hamilton): The father of Raymond Garraty, William showed his only child "the old ways" and encouraged Raymond to always stand up for what he believes in . "Never forget who you are" were the father's last words to his son. He remains Raymond's hero to this day.
  • Mrs. Garraty (Judy Greer): Mrs. Garraty is a single mother, raising her son Ray alone after her husband William died, a casualty of the war-torn climate. Her loving, warm nature is tempered by her profound grief and pervasive fear for her and Ray's safety. As she apprehensively drives Ray to the starting point of The Long Walk, Mrs. Garraty struggles to balance her support of Ray's participation and her avowed determination as a single parent to protect him from harm.
  • The Major (Mark Hamill): Known simply as "The Major," there is not much known about this authoritarian true believer, aside from serving as the figurehead and originator of the grueling televised competition known as The Long Walk. Menacing behind his dark sunglasses, The Major barks slogans meant to both motivate and intimidate contestants, a ruthless enforcer whose mysterious connection to several walkers is gradually revealed.

RULES OF THE WALK:

  • Total participants: 50
  • Required pace to maintain: 3 MPH
  • If participants fall below the required pace, they will get a warning. If they are unable to reach the speed within 10 seconds, they will get an additional warning.
  • Total warnings: 3
  • Note: Participants are eliminated before a 4th warning is called.

Note: The number of participating young men, walking speed, time between warnings, and other details are specific to the film and differ from the book.

The Long Walk movie changes many things from the novel. The walking speed was dropped from 4 to 3 mph. The number of walkers was dropped from 100 to 50. The age range was increased from 13-18 to 19+. The walkers have wrist devices which tell them their speed (and probably number of warnings). They don't have these in the novel. Each walker gets a unique number in movie and novel, but in the novel, the numbers are in order by last name, so Aaronson is #1 and Zuck is #100. In the movie, the numbers range from 1 to 50, so walkers in the novel with numbers greater than 50, have got a new number. Zuck is still last at #50. Stebbins went from #88 to #38. For some reason, Baker went from #3 in the novel to #6 in the movie. Ewing went from #9 in the novel to #1 in the movie. In the novel, the Major gives out large plastic numbers which attach to their clothing with pressure strips. In the movie, they wear military dog-tags with the number punched out of it. Their wrist-devices also have their number on it. In the novel, each walker has a 2-minute timer which counts down when their speed in the correct direction falls below 4 mph. They get warned at 90, 60, 30 and ticket at 0. In the movie, each walker has a 40 second timer, and it counts down when their speed in the correct direction falls below 3 mph, and they get warned at 30, 20, 10 and a ticket at 0. In the novel, a walker loses a warning for every hour they go without a warning, but it's not known how they lose warnings in the movie. Given things are condensed, maybe they lose a warning every 10 minutes they go without getting a warning. Or maybe they simply lose a warning every 10 minutes that they have a warning. It's also possible they don't lose warnings. Baker is white in the novel, but black in the movie. Garraty has a girlfriend in the novel, but Jan is not listed in IMDB. Garraty's father gets squadded in the novel. Nobody seems to know what "squadded" means in the novel. In the movie, Garraty's father has died, a casualty of the war-torn climate. There are many main characters in the novel that are not listed in IMDB. Scramm seems to have been folded into Stebbins. Mike and Joe seem to have been folded into Collie Parker. Barkovitch has the appearance of Stebbins. No mention of Gribble. Percy is given the last name of Grimes. There's a guy that looks like Abraham. He even has a #2 dog-tag, but he's not listed in IMDB. In the movie, Stebbins is given the first name of Billy, although Billy is not used in IMDB. It was spotted on an attendance card held by the Major. We don't know Collie Parker's number in the novel, but in the movie, he is #48.

Movie Onsite Photos
THE LONG WALK movie (IMDB Link) will be produced by New Line Cinema.
James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC) (IMDB Link) wrote a screenplay but a new screenplay has been written by JT Mollner (IMDB Link).
Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence (IMDB / Wikipedia) has signed on to direct.
Previously, the movie rights to the novel were held by Frank Darabont (THE MIST, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) (IMDB / Wikipedia).
Before that, George A. Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) tried to make the movie (IMDB / Wikipedia).
James Vanderbilt wrote the script on spec because he loved the book so much, even though he didn't have the rights to it.
When Frank Darabont's rights expired, James Vanderbilt and his producing partner Bradly Fischer immediately snapped it up.
Stephen King loved his adaptation. It's very close the spirit of the book.
New Line optioned the movie.
André Øvredal (IMDB / Wikipedia) was signed on to direct but has since stepped away as of August 2023.
Shooting locations being considered are Maine, California, Australia and Eastern Europe.
No news about casting or release dates as of July 6, 2019.
The novel has been compared to Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Death Race 2000, Battle Royale, The Condemned and The Running Man, but was written before these.

The novel is an alternate reality set in the late 70s or early 80s where everything is the same except for some alternate history. America is probably a dictatorship, possibly a dystopian but we can't be sure. There has been no movie set in an alternate reality past where everything is pretty much the same except for one small thing. The closest I can think of is Watchmen, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. To get around this confusion, they might set the movie in the near future as many synopsis say and toss the alternate reality history.
